history

Several cromlechs in the district of Mendizabale and on the Pic de Mokorreta indicate a prehistoric settlement of the area. 1154 bought Roger de Belzunce the Vicomté of Macaye from the Vicomte de Dax and was thus a vassal of the English king since the marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine to Henry Plantagenet . At the end of the Hundred Years War , Arnaud IV, landlord of Belzunce d'Ayherre, Viscount of Macaye and Lissague, and his son Jean took part in the reconquest of Labord from England under the command of Gaston IV , Viscount des Béarn, and set the English rule an end. In the spring of 1451 the peace treaty was signed at the Belzunce Castle in Ayherre. During this time the village developed on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela . The Vicomté came into the possession of the Castagnoles in the 17th century and passed into the hands of the Haraneder family through marriage in 1719. Nicolas de Haraneder, the last Viscount of Macaye, was a member of the Labourd nobility in the Estates General from 1789 on the eve of the French Revolution . In 1790 Macaye became the headquarters of a canton which, in addition to Macaye, included the municipalities of Mendionde and Louhossoa. During the reign of terror , like many surrounding villages, Macaye was declared a commune infâme because of its proximity to the Spanish border . As a result of the decree of March 3, 1794, most of the residents were deported to neighboring departments.
