Saint-Etienne-de-Baïgorry ( Basque Baigorri ) is a French municipality with 1477 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Bayonne and until its dissolution in 2015 was the capital of the canton of Saint-Étienne-de-Baïgorry , since then it has belonged to the canton of Montagne Basque .

history

The place name appeared in different forms in the past: Vallis que dicitur Bigur (980), Beguer , Beigur , Baigur and Baigorrie (1238), Sanctus-Stephanus de Bayguerr (1335), Sant-Esteban (1513), Baygorri (1650) and Thermopile (1793). The place name "Licérasse" occurs as: Liçaraçu (1402), Licarasse (1445), Lizarazu (1525), Lizaraçu (1621) Licerasse (1863).
