history

Three noble families determined the fate of the village in the Middle Ages . From the landlord family Ostankoa, which gave the municipality its name, three lines were derived, the families Etxezar, Zohueta and Gensanne. During the Huguenot Wars , which tore the whole of Navarre apart, the landlord Gensanne rebelled against his Queen Jeanne d'Albret , which put him in prison. The family's property was expropriated and transferred to the Montréal landlord family from Peyrehorade in what is now the Landes department. During the French Revolution , the church's properties were confiscated and the pastor was deported for refusing to take the oath on the civil constitution of the clergy .

Attractions

  • Parish church dedicated to Martin of Tours . Nothing remains of the original, undoubtedly Romanesque predecessor church. The current parish church dates from the 19th century. It has a bell tower above the entrance porch, a single nave nave and a flat apse , which is built high above a semi-underground sacristy . An outside staircase leads to the inner gallery on the south side . The baroque altarpiece inside the church dates from the 18th century. In the adjacent cemetery there are around 30 disc-shaped grave steles, called Hilarri , as well as graves with Navarra crosses. The Hilarri follow the pre-Christian tradition and do not always convey a Christian message. Some are between 50 cm and 60 cm in height and date from the 17th century, others are older and probably date from the 16th century. None of the steles give information about the name of the deceased, many at least have a date. The Navarra crosses, however, generally do not have any inscriptions. They differ mainly in their characteristic shape with a wide longitudinal bar and curved outlines.
