Arhansus is a French municipality with 74 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Bayonne and the canton of Pays de Bidache, Amikuze et Ostibarre (until 2015: canton of Iholdy ).

The inhabitants are called Arhantsusiar or Arhantsusitar . The name in the Basque language is accordingly Arhantsusi .

geography

Arhansus is located about 65 kilometers southeast of Bayonne in the French part of the Basque Country . It is part of the Pays d'Ostabarret in the historic province of Lower Navarre .

The community is surrounded by the neighboring communities:

• Uhart mixes in the north,
• Pagolle and Juxue in the south as well
• Ostabat-Asme in the northwest.

Arhansus is located in the catchment area of ​​the Adour River, somewhat elevated on the right bank of the Bidouze .

history

Prehistoric ramparts indicate an early settlement of the area. The place name appears in the scriptures in 1160 in the form aranchus, in 1291 as arhanssus , in 1305 as eransus . The settlement experienced a surge in growth after the construction of the local church in the 15th century.

Attractions

Saint-Etienne church of Arhansus

• Church Saint-Etienne of Arhansus, dedicated to St. Stephen . In the Middle Ages, on the hillside of the village, it was decorated with an architecture that is characteristic of the rural Basque Country. A special feature are three disc-shaped grave steles , each of which was placed on the tips of the bell gable as pinnacles during one of the extensive restorations in the 19th and 20th centuries. Instead of restoring the gable in its traditional form, abandoned grave steles from the neighboring cemetery have been given a new purpose. The cemetery still preserves many examples of this particular Basque tradition.

Economy and Infrastructure

In addition to traditional agriculture, green tourism also determines the economy.

Arhansus is located in the AOC zones of the Ossau-Iraty and the pig breed and ham "Kintoa". The Ossau-Iraty is a traditionally made semi-hard cheese made from sheep's milk and is produced on site.
