Saint-Jean-Baptiste local church
Altar of the local church
  • Local church dedicated to John the Baptist . Romanesque parts of today's church go back to the 12th century. Since the parish is on the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela , its first destination was to take pictures of pilgrims . Probably completely destroyed during the Huguenot Wars in the 16th century, the church was rebuilt a century later. In this context the bell gable was erected, a typical example of the Soule region with its characteristic clocher trinitaire . The gable has three pointed roofs of the same height, each with a cross, symbolizing the Trinity . At the beginning of the 1990s the church was completely restored. The arrangement of the columns and arcades in the middle of the nave inside the church is one of the Romanesque elements that survived the destruction in the 16th century. As in all Basque churches, galleries here extend on three sides. These are traditionally reserved for men who, according to tradition, sit separately from women during a mass . The unit of altar , altarpiece and tabernacle dates back to the 18th century and represents the baroque style widespread in the Basque Country . In the middle of the altarpiece, the eye falls on a painting that shows the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. The use of intense colors, especially purple and gold, enhances the overall impression. A seraph with a round face and colored cheeks can be seen on the altarpiece . However, his large eyes and the downward-pointing corners of his mouth give him a sad expression. The rest of his body is made up of intertwined gold motifs. The tabernacle in the center of the altarpiece is made of the same gilded wood. It is richly decorated with angels and putti heads , a bell and numerous floral motifs. A statue of Christ fills the entire door of the tabernacle. It is the representation called “Christ at rest” in Christian imagery. It depicts the moment of Passion after Christ was stripped of his clothes and before he was nailed to the cross. Here he only wears a cloak over his shoulders, a crown of thorns on his head and a reed in his hand.
  • House Prebende. It was probably built between the 16th and 19th centuries and has characteristics typical of the Soule houses. The harsh climate near the Pyrenees requires solid building materials such as pebbles or gravel to build the walls. Another special feature is the high pitch of the roof, sometimes 50 °, to avoid the accumulation of too much heavy snow in winter.
