history

The origins of the municipality go back to the two places Cette and Eygun, which were united during the French Revolution . A barrow and a cromlech are evidence of early settlement of the area.

Cette was first mentioned in 1250 as Sete according to den for d'Aspe , a 14th century manuscript . In the census in 1385 45 households were counted in Cete and it was noted that the place belongs to the Bailliage des Vicomtes des Aspetals.

Eygun, lying in the valley in contrast to Cette, developed due to its location on the Camino de Santiago to Santiago de Compostela .

Further toponyms and mentions of Cette and Eygun were subsequently:

  • Ceta and Igun (1449, regulations of the Supreme Court of Béarn),
  • Sent-Pée-de-Cette (1620, incorporated into the Diocese of Oloron ) and
  • Sette (1675, 16th to 18th century manuscript collection).

On the map of Cassini 1750, Cette is entered in its current form of name, Eygun as Aigun .

Population development

After the population peaked at 525 in the mid-19th century, the number fell to around 400 by the 1920s. As a result, the size of the community has shrunk to less than 100 inhabitants and this negative trend is still ongoing.

Saint-Barthelémy local church in Eygun
  • Eygun local church, dedicated to the Apostle Bartholomew . The long building was built between 1890 and 1895 and restored in the 20th century. The nave consists of a nave and is closed with a semicircular apse . The bell tower above the entrance porch has three floors and is supported by buttresses . On the ground floor a round arch opens the way to the entrance of the church, on the second floor an oculus breaks through the facade, on the third floor round arches illuminate the room in which the bells are located. A polygonal helmet with a weather vane in the form of a Latin cross closes the tower at the top.
  • Local church of Cette, dedicated to the apostle Simon Peter . It was built in the Romanesque style in the second half of the 12th century in connection with the lay monastery . In the 17th century the bell tower was added as an entrance porch, and extensive renovations took place in the 19th century. At the apse the eye falls on the corbels , which are designed as geometrical figures. The interior of the nave has a false barrel vault , its entrance portal is framed by blue colored limestone . On the apse dome , wall paintings of older date have been discovered below wall paintings .
  • Manor of Cette. The origin of the building erected in the second half of the 17th century may be in the former lay monastery. Today it houses a hotel.
  • Fixed house of Cette. The current building consists of two parts, the fixed house from the 14th century and the residential wing from the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century. The eleven arched notches and the twin west window appear to come from the original building, while the other twin windows were inserted after the 17th century. In the 20th century, modifications were made without damaging the medieval character of the building too much.
  • Former train station of Cette-Eygun. At the end of the 19th century, the French and Spanish authorities decided to build a railway line across the Pyrenees . In 1928 the Pau – Canfranc railway was inaugurated. A train station was set up near Cette-Eygun, which should also serve the neighboring village of Lescun . In 1970 a bridge on the railway line collapsed due to an accident. It was not rebuilt and the line was closed. The building gained a certain fame as a temporary base for the La goutte d'eau movement , which opposed the construction of the Somport road tunnel . On June 4, 2014, the building was evacuated by the gendarmerie.
