Geüs-d'Oloron is a French municipality with 252 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Oloron-Sainte-Marie and the Canton of Oloron-Sainte-Marie-1 (until 2015: Canton of Oloron-Sainte-Marie-Ouest ).

The name in the Gascognischen language is Gèus d'Auloron .

Geüs-d'Oloron is located approx. 15 km northwest of Oloron-Sainte-Marie in the Josbaig valley in the historic province of Béarn .

history

The head of a statue of Augustus was found near the church , evidence of a settlement as early as Gallo-Roman times . Geüs and Saint-Goin together formed a municipality in the 1385 census of the Béarn, in which a total of 29 households were counted. Both villages were part of the Oloron Bailliage .

In the 17th century the farmers of Geüs made a unique trade with the landlord de Luxe. For the right to graze their animals in a forest that was in his possession, they gave him part of their herd. In 1724 the community was one of the centers for the production of bed linen and stockings.

Population development

After a peak in the number of inhabitants in the middle of the 19th century with around 350 inhabitants, the number fell by a total of more than half during short recovery phases up to the 1950s. Then a phase of population growth began.

Parish Church of Notre-Dame in Geüs-d'Oloron
  • Parish church, dedicated to Mary , the mother of Jesus . Located in the middle of the cemetery, the parish church was extensively rebuilt towards the end of the 19th century. From the original, in the High Middle Ages built church is Romanesque apse survived. In 1855 the bell tower was built according to plans by the architect Bernard Montaut from Oloron, but was rebuilt between 1883 and 1885 according to plans by the architect Bourdette from Orthez , as it threatened to collapse. The church furnishings include an 18th century altarpiece with a painting by the painter Jérôme Ribère depicting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary , a 17th century tabernacle with a ciborium on each of its three sides and a seat with a high back . The church also has a second altarpiece from an earlier convent that supports the altar table .
  • Geüs-d'Oloron watermill . It dates from the 16th century and is one of the oldest mills in the region. Located on a derivative of the Joos, all villagers had to grind their grain in the mill that was owned by the landlord. According to legend, there was a secret underground passage between the mill and the church.

Agriculture is an important economic factor in the community. Geüs-d'Oloron is located in the AOC zones of Ossau-Iraty , a traditionally produced semi-hard cheese made from sheep's milk, as well as the pig breed and the ham "Kintoa".
