Accous is a French municipality with 461 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Oloron-Sainte-Marie and the Canton of Oloron-Sainte-Marie-1 (until 2015: Canton of Accous ).

The residents are called accousiens . The name in the Gascognic language is Acós .

geography

Accous is located about 30 kilometers south of Oloron-Sainte-Marie in the Aspetal , one of the three valleys of the Hoch– Béarn with the Barétous valley in the west and the Ossau valley in the east. The municipality borders on the province of Huesca in Spain to the south . Accous is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Bedous and Aydius in the north, Laruns in the east, Cette-Eygun and Borce in the south and Lées-Athas and Lescun in the west.

Accous is located in the catchment area of ​​the Adour River on the Gave d'Aspe . Numerous mountain streams flow into the Gave d'Aspe in the municipality, u. a. the Gave de Lescun and the Berthe .

history

Aspa Luca was a stop on the Roman road to Saragossa in the 3rd century , listed in the Antonini Itinerarium . Called Aquos d'Aspe , the place was already a larger settlement with 400 inhabitants in 1385 . A decisive event was the march through of the Protestant troops under Gabriel de Lorges during the Third Huguenot War (1568–1570). They set fire to the medieval accous. In the 18th century, half of the residents were the so-called Cagots , a group excluded from society and discriminated against.

Attractions

  • The parish church, dedicated to Martin of Tours , located on the historic stage of the Camino de Santiago on the Somport -Pass to Santiago de Compostela . The oldest preserved part is the side entrance, which bears the year 1358. The apse from the 15th century survived the fire of 1569. The church was rebuilt in the 17th and 19th centuries. It now has a nave with two aisles , surmounted by the church tower with a tent roof with a lantern as an attachment. The church underwent a restoration in the second half of the 20th century.

  • The chapel dedicated to Saturninus of Toulouse . In the hamlet of Jouers , north of Accous, there is a 12th century chapel. Burned to the ground by the troops in the Third Huguenot War, it was restored and rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries.
  • The chapel in honor of Christophorus is located in the district of Aulet . Its origin is unknown, but documents show that it must have been built before 1569. It was a destination for pilgrimages , as there were three wells and a healing pool in its vicinity, the water of which was said to have healing properties. From 1856 to 1940, a procession was held on July 25th each year. Since the chapel was restored in 1980, mass has been held there every year on July 25th.

Economy and Infrastructure
