Lasseubetat is a French municipality with 207 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Oloron-Sainte-Marie and the Canton of Oloron-Sainte-Marie-2 (until 2015: Canton Lasseube ).

The inhabitants are called Lasseubétois or Lasseubétoises .

Lacommande is about 20 kilometers east of Oloron-Sainte-Marie in the historic province of Béarn .

Lasseubetat lies in the catchment area of the Adour River . A tributary of the Gave de Pau , the Bayse , with its tributaries Peyrouse and Baysole, flows through the area of the municipality as does the Ruisseau les Courrèges, a tributary of the Ruisseau de Labagnère, which flows into the Bayse.

history

The origin of the name of the municipality goes back to the Gascognic word la sauvetat , a place of refuge under the protection of the church in the Middle Ages of southern France. This served to ensure the development and cultivation of the land.

Population development

After the peak of the population of around 550 in the middle of the 19th century, the number decreased during short recovery phases until the 1980s and stabilized at a level of around 175 inhabitants. In recent years there has been a growth to over 200 inhabitants.

Attractions

Parish church dedicated to Vincent de Valencia . In the 1906 register it is listed as recently constructed, but it was undoubtedly a restoration project. Five stained glass windows with motifs of religious people were installed between 1902 and 1903, works by the glass painter Bernard Montaut from Pau . The single-nave nave with a false barrel vault in the shape of a round arch ends in the east with a flat apse and in the west with a bell tower above the entrance porch, which is provided with a square helmet covered with slate . The baroque main altar from the 18th and 19th centuries , consisting of an altar, altar retable and tabernacle , is gilded and in different colors, especially in red and yellow tones. The narrow pillars that frame the painting in the middle are decorated with gilded foliage on a red background. The church keeps in its choir a painting depicting the martyrdom of St. Lawrence of Rome . It is a copy from 1650 by the French painter Eustache Le Sueur (1616–1655), a pioneer of French classical art.

Economy and Infrastructure

Agriculture and services determine the municipality's economy. Lasseubetat located in the zones of the AOC Weinbaugebiete Jurançon and Béarn and the Ossau-Iraty , a hard cheese traditionally produced from sheep's milk.
