geography
Alos-Sibas-Abense is located about 30 kilometers southwest of Oloron-Sainte-Marie in the historical region of Soule , one of the three historical territories in the French part of the Basque Country .
Alos-Sibas-Abense is surrounded by the neighboring communities:
- Ossas-Suhare and Trois-Villes in the north,
- Tardets-Sorholus in the east,
- Laguinge-Restoue and Lichans-Sunhar in the south as well
- Alçay-Alçabéhéty-Sunharette and Camou-Cihigue to the west.
Alos-Sibas-Abense lies in the catchment area of the Adour River on the left bank of the season . The Apoura crosses the municipality and flows into the season, as does the Jaga brook , which has its source in the municipality.
history
The place name of Sibas appears as early as 1178, the name of Alos in 1375, that of Abense in 1385. One of the ten chiefs of the Soule was in the hamlet of Sibas.
The inhabitants of the communities developed a special technique of controlled incineration, French: Écobuage . For this purpose, the top layer of the meadows is removed, dried and burned in order to scatter the ashes back onto the meadows. This method of fertilization was essentially used between the 13th and 18th centuries, until new types of fertilizer appeared in the 19th century . Nevertheless, the traditional method continues to be used in winter to clear the agricultural areas of ferns and brambles.
The villages of Alos and Sibas merged in October 1843. A part of the village Abense-de-Haut was added to the new municipality Alos-Sibas-Abense in April 1859, another part to the municipality Tardets.
coat of arms
The coat of arms can be interpreted as follows:
The blue waves in the upper part represent the rivers Saison and Apoura. The bridge stands for the five bridges in the town and is, in a figurative sense, a symbol of solidarity and harmony. The sun wheel over the bridge in this simple form refers to Basque mythology. The light and warmth of the sun make life possible and through the regular cycle reminds of the resurrection and eternal life.
The black tower at the bottom left represents the noble house of Sibas. The inkwell and the quill in the middle are reminiscent of the Jauregiberri von Alos family. The siblings Jean, Madeleine and Clément were writers and Basque activists . The three flames represent the noble house in Abense.

Attractions
- The church of Saint-Julien von Abense, dedicated to Julianus von Brioude , is a typical example of the Soule region with the characteristic clocher trinitaire . The church tower has three pointed roofs, each with a cross as a symbol of the Trinity . The bells are hung in two continuous wall openings in the church tower. Another special feature is the high roof pitch of the nave of approx. 45 ° in order to avoid an accumulation of too much heavy snow.
- Church of Alos, in honor of the Assumption of Mary , was originally built in the Romanesque style in the 11th or 12th century and is therefore the oldest church in the municipality. The building was restored in 1967 after an earthquake . Only the apse has been preserved from the first building today.
- Church of Sibas, in honor of Martin of Tours . The year of construction of this church lies between those of the other two churches in Alos-Sibas-Abense.
- Noble house of Sibas. The house is mentioned as early as 1178. However, the original residence has been destroyed and the current building is likely from the 13th century. The house is considered to be the birthplace of the father of Johannes Baptist de La Salle , founder of the religious order of the Brothers of Christian Schools .
