The Arrondissement Oloron-Sainte-Marie is an administrative district in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the French region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .
geography
The arrondissement borders in the west on the arrondissement Bayonne , in the east on the arrondissement Pau , in the north on the arrondissement Dax in the department of Landes , in the southeast on the arrondissement Argelès-Gazost in the department Hautes-Pyrénées ( Occitania ) and in the south on Spain with the autonomous provinces of Aragon and Navarre .
history
On March 4, 1790, with the establishment of the Basses-Pyrénées department, a "District Oloron" was founded, which largely corresponded to today's arrondissement. On February 17, 1800, the Arrondissement Oloron was founded.
Since September 10, 1926, parts of the dissolved arrondissements Mauléon and Orthez were slammed into the arrondissement of Oloron.
The new territorial division of the cantons, defined by the law of May 17, 2013 and, in relation to the department, by the decree of February 25, 2014, resulted in a new administrative structure of the department in 2015, with the number of cantons in the department from 52 has now been reduced to 27. Since then, the communes of a canton are no longer necessarily in the same arrondissement and several cantons are divided into two arrondissements.

Reorganization of the arrondissements in 2017
A reorganization of the municipalities was carried out in December 2016 to take account of the changes in the municipal associations and to bring the arrondissements into line with the electoral districts. For this reason, the municipality of Gestas was removed from the Arrondissement of Bayonne and added to the Arrondissement of Oloron-Sainte-Marie.
