Parbayse is a French municipality with 319 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau (until 2016: Arrondissement Oloron-Sainte-Marie ) and the canton of Le Cœur de Béarn (until 2015: Canton Monein ).

The name comes from the Latin pars ( German  part, department, piece ) and the name of the Bayse river . The inhabitants are called Parbaysiens and Parbaysiennes .

history

Until 1725 the village of Parbayse belonged to the municipality of Abos. When the Basses-Pyrénées department was founded in 1790, the geographical center of the department was sought and found in Parbayse. This was not officially accepted as the village was considered too small. In the 19th century there were at least twelve watermills in the municipality.

After a peak in the number of inhabitants of around 350 in the first half of the 19th century, the number fell to around 160 during short recovery phases by the 1960s. Significant growth has been recorded since the 1990s.

Attractions

  • House in Parbayse. It was built in the 19th century in the traditional Béarner style. A gable facade with only one window faces the street, while the main facade faces an inner courtyard, which is closed off with ancillary buildings, a wall and a wrought iron gate. The main building houses living rooms and bedrooms, which can be reached via the entrance in the middle of the ground floor. The windows are arranged symmetrically from below to the top floor. In accordance with the Béarnian tradition, there are other architectural elements such as B. the two chimneys that are at the ends of the slate roof and the framing of windows and doors to the outside with white stones. The house is privately owned and cannot be viewed.

Economy and Infrastructure

The economy of the municipality is primarily determined by agriculture, especially viticulture. The Tessier family, owners of the Domaine Barthelemy winery , grow wines from the AOC Jurançon on 6.5 hectares in Parbayse .

Parbayse is located in the AOC zones of the Jurançon and Béarn wine-growing regions and of Ossau-Iraty , a traditionally made cheese made from sheep's milk.
