history

No less than 20 barrows from the Iron Age yielded urns and fragments made of bronze and iron as evidence of an early settlement of the water-rich region. The Barzun dolmen was discovered in 1968 in a field near Barzun and, after a stopover, has now been set up on the town hall square of Coarraze .

Barzun was first mentioned as Barzunum in the Béarn files in 1286 . In the census of 1385, 13 households were counted and it was noted that the settlement is in the Bailliage of Pau. Further mentions of Barzun are in the following Barsun (census, 1402) and Barssun (Reformation of Béarn, 1538). On the map of Cassini in 1750 Barzun is as Barsun entered, as during the French Revolution as 1793 Barsun out.

The economic factors of the 18th century were tanning and the use of the marl deposits . Both activities have long been discontinued. On April 7, 1859, a major fire broke out in which around 30 houses were killed.

Population development

After peaking at over 700 residents in the mid-19th century, the number had halved by the 1940s. Since then it has increased again by a total of more than 50%.
