Le Mans 24 Hours 2015
The 83rd 24 Hours of Le Mans , the 83 e Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , also World Championship, Rd3, Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans, France , took place from June 13th to 14th 2015 on the Circuit des 24 Heures .
Before the race
On December 15, 2014, the Automobile Club de l'Ouest announced the first ten invitations for the 56 starting places to be awarded. Those invited include the overall and class winners of the race from the previous year , the overall and class winners in the overall standings of the European Le Mans Series , the Asian Le Mans Series and the United SportsCar Championship . On December 26, 2014, the preliminary schedule for the event was announced.
The first two races of the 2015 season in the FIA World Endurance Championship showed a different picture of the balance of power, especially in the LMP1 class. While Toyota still dominated racing in 2014 with the TS040 Hybrid , this changed in 2015 in favor of Porsche and Audi . Audi won both the race at Silverstone and the endurance race at Spa-Francorchamps . André Lotterer , Benoît Tréluyer and Marcel Fässler both remained victorious.
According to the regulations, the LMP1 works teams were obliged to compete with hybrid vehicles. Toyota entered with a further developed version of the TS040 Hybrid. Both Porsche (with the 919 Hybrid ) and Audi (with the Audi R18 E-Tron Quattro RP5 ) built completely new cars. The fourth manufacturer was Nissan with the Nissan GT-R LM Nismo . A completely different concept was pursued with this car than with the LMP1 factory competitors: the engine of the car was not behind but in front of the driver ( front mid-engine ) and drove the front wheels, while the electric motor was supposed to drive the rear wheels. Due to many problems, Nissan drove the race without an electric motor. They even had to skip the first two races of the FIA World Endurance Championship; the vehicle thus made its racing debut at Le Mans.
Test day
The racing event started on May 31 with the test day. This first day of training was held until 1994 to enable teams and drivers to make their first use on the track for the race of the respective year. After that, these training times were waived for several reasons. In 1994, only 35 racing teams took part on the test day - the fastest at the time was Lionel Robert on a Courage C32LM - and the organizer did not want to close the public road sections to traffic for another two days. The Ligne Droite des Hunaudières (English: Mulsanne Straight ), part of the route départementale D338 (1973-2006 route national N138 / 1824-1973 N158 ) was particularly affected by the suspension during training and races . This road connects the two cities of Le Mans and Tours . As a result of the closures, the daily heavy goods traffic was forced to take longer detours and access to some companies was made more difficult. With the opening of a new section of the A28 autobahn , a large part of everyday traffic was relocated to the autobahn, relieving the old main road. With the introduction of the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2012 , the test day was also reactivated.
All 56 entries and four racing cars on the reserve list took part in the test. The second KCMG- Oreca 05 (# 49) (pilots: Tomonobu Fujii , Satoshi Hoshino and Christian Klien ), the second Ibañez- Oreca 03 (# 44) (pilots: Yutaka Yamagishi , Pierre Perret , Stéphane Raffin and José Ibañez ), the Gulf Racing- Porsche 911 RSR (# 86) ( Drivers : Mike Wainwright , Adam Carroll and Phil Keen ) and the Formula Rating- Ferrari 458 Italia GT2 (# 60) (Drivers: Johnny Laursen , Mikkel Mac Jensen and Andrea Rizzoli ). There were also two additional AF Corse -Ferrari 458 Italia GT2s as replacement cars for the team and two LMP3 ginettas. The two LMP3 cars were primarily used by Nissan Motorsports pilots who had no knowledge of the route.
The two four-hour sessions took place under mixed weather conditions. Sometimes it rained heavily. Neel Jani first set the fastest time in the first session with a time of 3: 21.945 minutes, which his Porsche team- mate Brendon Hartley improved to 3: 21.061 minutes a little later . Marco Bonanomi achieved the best Audi time with 3: 22.307 minutes. The preliminary tests already showed that Toyota could not keep up with the pace of the competition from Porsche and Audi. For the TS040 Hybrid , times just over 3:25 minutes were possible. The afternoon was marked by heavy rain, so that no meaningful times were possible.
training
The first of the three qualification training sessions took place on June 10th under good external conditions. In the first flying laps, the three Porsche 919 Hybrids in the LMP1 class ensured the fastest training times of the entire weekend. Timo Bernhard first set the best time in 3: 17.767 minutes, which was soon undercut by Neel Jani with 3: 16.887 minutes and which ultimately remained the pole position time . This time corresponded to an average speed of 249.200 km / h. He was more than three seconds faster than Stéphane Sarrazin in 2010 in the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP . Sarrazin drove a time of 3: 19.711 minutes, which corresponded to an average of 245.677 km / h. However, in 2010 Loïc Duval was in the race - also on a Peugeot 908 Hdi FAP - on his fastest race lap by seven tenths of a second faster. Since the installation of the two chicanes on the Hunaudières in 1990 , no driver at Le Mans had driven a lap faster than Jani in 2015. Despite the two chicanes, the highest average speed so far at Le Mans was within reach. In the 1985 by Hans-Joachim Stuck in a Porsche 962 251.815 km / h achieved lacked only 2.5 km / h.
Behind the Porsche prototypes followed the three Audis, led by Loïc Duval and almost three seconds behind the pole position. Stéphane Sarrazin in the Toyota TS040 Hybrid was two seconds behind the fastest Porsche. Nissan played no role, the fastest time of 3: 38.468 minutes was more than twenty seconds behind the pole position time. The number 12 R-One used by Rebellion Racing was surprisingly fast, which was only three seconds behind the Toyotas without hybrid technology.
The fastest LMP2 lap time was also achieved early in the session. Richard Bradley drove a time of 3: 38.032 minutes in the KCMG-Oreca 05 and was one second ahead of the following competition. Aston Martin dominated the GTE classes and ranked first in both the PRO and AM categories. Richie Stanaway set the best time for the professionals with 3: 54.928 minutes. For the amateurs, Pedro Lamy, plagued by chickenpox, set the top time. With 3: 55.102 minutes he was only slightly slower than his teammate Stanaway.
The weather forecast for Thursday predicted bad weather, but the announced rain did not materialize. It quickly became apparent, however, that it was hardly possible to improve the times, so that almost all teams worked exclusively on the race set-up.
Race course
The race started at 3 p.m. local time with the flying start of the 55 vehicles. The number 23 Nissan GT-R LM Nismo, in which Jann Mardenborough was supposed to drive the starting turn, was still in the pits with a technical problem with the clutch , so only 54 cars crossed the starting line. After just a few bends, there was the first change in leadership when Timo Bernhard in the Porsche with the number 17 passed his team-mate Jani on the Hunaudières. Before the second lap came to an end, Nico Hülkenberg in the third Porsche fell back to sixth place behind all three Audis. After the race he explained that at the beginning of the race he needed time to get into the rhythm and had to let the heavily attacking Audi drivers go.
The first retirement in the race occurred after just under an hour of racing and resulted in the first safety car phase . The Manthey -Porsche 911 RSR, which was being driven by Patrick Pilet at the time, lost oil as a result of a drive train defect when approaching the first Hunaudières chicane. On the leaked oil, Alexandre Imperatori collided in the Rebellion R-One with the Strakka-Dome S103 by Johnny Kane . While Imperatori and Kane were able to pit for repairs, the Porsche caught fire and was eliminated. The safety car was sent out so that marshals could apply oil binding agents. After the restart, André Lotterer took the lead in the Audi with the number 7 in quick succession past the two Porsches in front of him. Lotterer lost the lead after the third series of pit stops. While the drivers of all three hybrid Porsches changed after the third stint and a new set of tires was fitted, the Audis only refueled. After only one lap, Lotterer had to return to the pits due to an impending tire damage. As a result, the driver and tires of the number 7 Audi were changed and the vehicle fell back to sixth place in the overall standings.
While Richard Bradley and Tristan Gommendy's Oreca 05s were leading the way in the LMP2 class , there was a close race in the GTE classes between the almost equally fast cars from Aston Martin, Ferrari , Porsche and Chevrolet .
The second safety car phase was initiated by Loïc Duval. On the approach to Indianapolis, the Audi driver ran into a group of slow vehicles that had slowed down their speed because of waved yellow flags. Duval hit the group at high speed and tried to avoid the grass strip to the right. He lost control of the car and crashed into the guardrail on the left . The car was only slightly damaged in the impact and could be repaired within four minutes of Duval's return to the pits, but fell back to eighth place overall. The three safety cars had to be brought onto the track because the damaged guardrail had to be replaced.
Several cars had problems during the second safety car phase. Nicki Thiim , who was in the lead in the LMGTE Pro with the number 95 Aston Martin, pitted with a leaky power steering system and lost the lead. The Proton Porsche with the number 88 broke down due to an engine fire. After the safety cars had been brought back to their starting point, the battle in the GT classes continued unabated. Brendon Hartley in the Porsche took the lead, while Filipe Albuquerque in the Audi with the number 9 set a new lap record in a time of 3: 17.647 minutes. At dusk Romain Dumas braked himself in the Porsche with number 18 in front of the Mulsanne and hit a pile of tires. The damaged front section could be swapped quickly, but the car dropped to fifth place.
The third safety car phase was triggered by Paul-Loup Chatin , who had an accident in the Alpine A450b . When the race started again, Nico Hulkenberg took the lead. This was helped by a one-minute stop-and-go penalty that leader Mark Webber had to take because team-mate Hartley had overtaken Hartley under the yellow flag. All three Nissans had constant technical problems, with the first falling out before half-time.
During the night, the Porsches consistently set faster lap times than the Audis and two cars, the numbers 19 and 17, managed to break away. For Toyota, the race was already decided at this stage. Both TS040s were already two laps behind and could no longer win on their own. A preliminary decision was made on Sunday morning when all three Audis had problems. The fastest car, number 7, lost seven minutes in the pits because part of the rear had to be replaced.
Porsche celebrated a double victory. Overall victory went to Nick Tandy and the two Le Mans debutants Nico Hülkenberg and Earl Bamber . The third Porsche works car won the race; the vehicle that did not regularly take part in the world championship, but was only prepared for Le Mans after its use in Spa.
Class wins
In the LMP2 class, KCMG triumphed with drivers Richard Bradley, Matthew Howson and Nicolas Lapierre . The Oreca 05 of the Chinese KCMG team was looked after by technicians and mechanics from the Oreca team and did not run completely technically without problems. Nevertheless, the car was in the lead for most of the race (Lapierre braked once in the Indianapolis curve, but lost only insignificant time) and finished ninth in the overall standings.
In the GTE Pro class, the decision was made in favor of the only factory that entered the race after the fastest Aston Martin failed due to a gearbox damage on the long-running leading AF Corse Ferrari of Gianmaria Bruni , Giancarlo Fisichella and Toni Vilander , who threw the vehicle far back -Corvette from Oliver Gavin , Tommy Milner and Jordan Taylor (17th place overall).
The decision of the GTE-Am class was particularly dramatic. Almost an hour before the end of the race, car owner Paul Dalla Lana had an accident so badly in the Aston Martin in the Ford chicane before the start and finish that he had to give up the race. A class victory that seemed certain was lost as a result. Victor Shaitar , Aleksey Basov and Andrea Bertolini were able to benefit from this accident and thus achieved a class win in Ferrari Italia (20th place in the overall standings).
The death of Gustav Büsing
As in previous years, Gustav Büsing , journalist and long-time Le Mans team leader at Eurosport , commented on the race in 2015 together with colleagues and the two former racing drivers Frank Biela and Ralf Kelleners . Büsing had commented on the start phase and was also active as a commentator in the early evening . Before another mission early in the morning, he apologized by stating that he was not feeling well. The Audi team doctor who was called up found an acute heart attack and organized the immediate transport to a hospital. After a prompt operation, Büsing's condition worsened and he was placed in an artificial coma. A few days later he was transferred to a Paris clinic, where he died on June 29 of a secondary infarction.

Start list
On February 5, 2015, the ACO published a first preliminary starting list with 56 participants plus seven reserve teams.
Reserve vehicles
As in previous years, the ACO published a list of reserve vehicles at the same time as the first preliminary start list. Three LMP and four GT teams were put on the list and were given the opportunity to replace those teams that were unable to take part in the race for various reasons. The LMP reservists were only allowed to replace vehicles of the LMP1 and LMP2 class, just as the GT reservists were only allowed to replace GT vehicles. The advancement takes place in the order of the nomination.
