Le Mans 24 hour race 1993

The winning car: Peugeot 905 Evo 1 with starting number 3
The second-placed Evo 1 with starting number 1

The 61st 24-hour race of Le Mans , the 61 e Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , also 24 Heures du Mans, Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans , took place from 19 to 20 June 1993 on the Circuit des 24 Heures .

The race

With the end of the sports car world championship in 1992 , the sports car scene lacked a championship. The 1993 24-hour race nevertheless had a number of well-known starters. The Peugeot works team , headed by Jean Todt , was able to clinch its first victory in 1992 with the 905 at the second race . Derek Warwick , Yannick Dalmas and Mark Blundell won by a clear margin on a Toyota TS010 . At Peugeot, the 905 was continuously developed. In 1992, the last evolutionary stage, the 905 Evo 2, was driven almost continuously in the sports car world championship. Its rugged front section set it apart from its predecessor, and a narrower cockpit meant less air resistance and weight. Due to its futuristic appearance, the vehicle was soon nicknamed the Supercopter . In addition to many changes in detail, another important innovation was the semi-automatic 6-speed gearbox , which made it easier for the driver to change gears . In Le Mans in 1992, however, the Evo 1 was driven and Todt insisted on using this model in 1993 as well, which in his opinion was better suited for a 24-hour race.

The only opponents for overall victory were the also adapted TS010 from Toyota . The Porsche 962 variants, which are now almost a decade old , were given just as little chance of overall victory as the new construction of Yves Courage , the C30 .

The first incident, there were already in the warmup than Eddie Irvine in TS010 with the Ferrari 348LM of Robin Smith collided, sparking a training crash. While the Toyota could be repaired before the race, the Ferrari trio had to forego racing. Ironically, Irvine then led the first ten laps of the race up to the first refueling stop, where he was the only one of the top car drivers to stay in the car for a second stint. The Irishman continued to lead the race. Only at the second stop did the Toyota lose the lead to the Peugeots, who from then on set the race pace. The race between the two Peugeots with the numbers 1 and 3 remained open for a long time. In the end, the team Éric Hélary , Christophe Bouchut and Geoff Brabham prevailed and led a Peugeot triple victory.
