Le Mans 24 hour race 1935
The 13th 24-hour race at Le Mans , the 13 s Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , also Les 24 Heures du Mans Circuit de la Sarthe , was held from June 15 to 16 1935 on the Circuit des 24 Heures instead.
The race
The largest number of starters to date, 55, went to the 13th Le Mans 24-hour race on June 15, 1935. Great Britain provided the bulk of the vehicles with 37 vehicles. Works teams from Aston Martin , Singer , Riley and Austin were at the start. For the first time, Frazer Nash sent two works cars to the Sarthe. The most powerful British car was the Lagonda used privately by Johnny Hindmarsh and Luis Fontés . For the first time, a married couple took part. However, Tommy and Elsie Wisdom , called "The Tommy and Bill Show," sat in different vehicles. Tommy Wisdom drove a Singer 9 Le Mans , his wife Elsie drove a Riley Nine together with Canadian Kay Petre . Neither of them saw the checkered flag. Talbot came from France , now under the leadership of Anthony Lago, and Delahaye . The Romanian Prince Nikolaus was there again with his completely unfashionable but large-capacity Duesenberg .
The favorite was again the Alfa Romeo 8C . Four were entered privately, and the car that Raymond Sommer was in took the lead from the start. By nightfall, however, each of the four Italian cars had made it to the front of the field at least once. Most of the Bugattis and the Duesenberg had already failed before midnight . Raymond Sommer - who had to drive without a release after his teammate fell ill after the start - also gave up on early Sunday after technical problems. When Luigi Chinetti and Francis Curzon also had to give up, only the Alfa Romeo of Pierre Louis-Dreyfus and Henri Stoffel remained. When Dreyfus had to pit for a lengthy repair, the heavy Lagonda Rapide, with Hindmarsh at the wheel, took the lead. When Dreyfus caught up and overtook the Briton again, the pit crew made a fatal mistake. In the mistaken assumption that Dreyfus was already at the top, he was told to drive slowly in order to spare the Alfa. The French had only rounded back. By the time the error was noticed, it was too late. Dreyfus was able to make up massive ground, but in the end had to admit defeat by two car lengths. The later victorious Lagonda had almost dropped out. The car was plagued by transmission problems for almost the entire race, some of which became so severe that the drivers could barely change gear. On his last turn, Luis Fontés parked the Lagonda just in front of the pits and walked back to report a failure. But his pit crew sent him back out on the track, he could start the car, after some effort put it into first gear and drive on.
28 vehicles, more than ever before, saw the checkered flag, with the Lagonda team missing the distance record by more than 100 km.
