Nicholas of Romania, Romanian Nicolae de România (born August 5, 1903 in Sinaia , † June 9, 1978 in Madrid ) was a Romanian nobleman and Prince of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen as well as a racing car driver .

Life

Nicholas was born as the son of King Ferdinand I of Romania and Queen Maria at Peleș Castle in Sinaia . His older brother was the future King Karl II. Nicholas initially studied in Romania, from 1919 he attended lectures at the British Eton College . Since Karl had renounced the Romanian throne, his son Michael I became the new king after Ferdinand's death in 1927 . The underage Michael was in charge of a regency that also included Nikolaus.

After Charles returned as the new King of Romania, Nikolaus married Johanna Lucie Doletti in 1931, which is why he had to go into exile twice between 1931 and 1933. Nikolaus had a second marriage with Therese Figueira de Mello. Neither marriage resulted in any offspring.

Nicholas was expelled from the royal family and went into exile for the third time. Nevertheless, Karl allowed him to attend the funeral of Queen Maria. In 1941 Nikolaus received his rights back from the new King Michael by decree.

Nicholas died in Madrid in 1978 and was buried in Lausanne .
