Le Mans 24 hour race 1929

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The starting grid
The Tracta Type A with starting number 27, driven by Jean-Albert Grégoire and Fernand Vallon, second in the class up to 1.1-liter displacement

The seventh 24-hour race at Le Mans , the 7 e Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , also 7emes Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans Circuit de la Sarthe Permanenthe , was held from 15 to 16 June 1929 on the Circuit des 24 Heures .

The race

For the first time since the opening race in 1923 , the route was adapted. The bend at Pontlieue was replaced by a new section of the route, reducing the length of the route to 16.340 km.

The favorites for overall victory were once again the Bentley works cars , which had won the race in the past two years. Woolf Barnato and Tim Birkin drove the new 6-cylinder Bentley, the Speed Six. Serious competition arose from the British cars, as in 1928 from the American Stutz and Chrysler , but these were used by French teams. There was also a 5.3-liter Du Pont and various private teams. The host country was mainly represented by Tracta .

The Bentleys set the pace from the start. Only the Stutz could follow the British works car. On Saturday evening, these vehicles had lapped the rest of the field at least once. After a quiet night, it soon became clear that the Bentleys couldn't be beaten. The British press was able to celebrate a quadruple Bentley victory in the end. Barnato won his second 24-hour race in a row and Tim Birkin his first. The victorious Speed Six also secured the index ranking and victory in the highest displacement class, so that Barnato and Birkin each received three prizes at the award ceremony.

In the final laps, the leading factory Bentleys formed up to cross the finish line in close succession. The “ Bentley Boys ” thus introduced a procedure that is still practiced today by the respective teams when they cross the finish line.
