The 24th Le Mans 24 hour race , the 24 e Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , also 24 Heures du Mans, Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans , took place from July 28th to 29th, 1956 the Circuit des 24 Heures .

Before the race

Changes to the circuit

As a result of the fatal accident during the race the year before , the racetrack was completely rebuilt in some places. The pit system was renewed and the distance between the pits and the main stands was widened. Although there was still only a white line on the road separating the stopping racing cars from racing, the track became so wide that several cars could easily drive side by side. The spectators in front of the main stands were now protected by a security fence. The radius of the first corner in front of the Esses has been changed, as has the entrance to Tertre Rouge and the infamous Maison Blanche corner. As a result of these reconstruction measures, the route length was reduced from 13.492 to 13.461 km.

Since the renovation work was not finished in time, the race had to be postponed by a month and took place in July for the first time since 1923 .

Changes to the regulations

The regulations have also been adapted. The cubic capacity of the prototypes - of which at least 50 had to be built - was reduced to 2500 cm³. The capacity of the tanks was limited to 130 liters, and a racing car had to complete at least 34 laps between two refueling stops. The windshields were enlarged and now had a height of 20 cm.

No driver was allowed to sit at the wheel continuously for more than 72 laps and not drive more than 14 hours in total. The training units were moved to the evening hours so that the drivers had to drive in the dark on Wednesday and Thursday before the race. The race director Charles Faroux was with Charles de Cortanze asked by a deputy.

The race

The race was less than two laps old when news of another serious accident caused horror in the pit lane. For the first time, Charles Faroux contemplated canceling the event immediately. When the information arrived that neither the driver nor the spectators had been harmed, there was general relief. The Belgian Jaguar factory driver Paul Frère had lost control of his Jaguar D-Type at the beginning of the Esses and touched the boundary on the right. His team-mate Jack Fairman , who was close behind , was unable to evade and crashed into the rear of the Jaguar. The chaos completed Alfonso de Portago , who with his work - Ferrari 625LM Spyder Touring fully met Fairmam and both Jaguar and himself pushed to the sidelines. Two works Jaguars and one works Ferrari were eliminated within a few seconds.

No sooner had the excitement about this incident subsided than another report of the accident reached the pit facilities. However, this accident ended fatally. Louis Héry had a rollover at Maison Blanche with his little Panhard and died of his serious injuries in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. There were a total of 13 accidents in the race.

After an early long pit stop by last year's winner Mike Hawthorn in the third factory Jaguar, Ninian Sanderson and Ron Flockhart took the lead in the Ecurie Ecosse D-Type. The Scottish Jaguar fought a fierce duel with the works Aston Martin owned by Stirling Moss and Peter Collins . The race was only decided just before the end when second gear broke on the DB3S . This handicap, which was particularly noticeable in the slow passage between the Indianapolis and Arnage corners, cost the Aston Martin team a lap. Third place went to Maurice Trintignant and Olivier Gendebien in a Ferrari; thus they saved the honor of the Scuderia. Gérard Laureau and Paul Armagnac won the important Index of Performance for Deutsch & Bonnet .
