John Desmond Titterington (born May 1, 1928 in Cultra ; † April 21, 2002 in Dundee ) was a Northern Irish racing driver .

Career

Desmond Titterington drove only one race to the Formula 1 World Championship in his career , but if the talented Northern Irishman had not unexpectedly announced his retirement in 1956, the path to an international top driver would have been possible.

After a few races in an Allard , Titterington became a member of the Ecurie Ecosse in 1953. For the Scottish racing team, he contested the Tourist Trophy in Dundrod in 1953 on an Aston Martin , which he finished in sixth.

In 1954 he showed his versatility when he finished sixth in the Monte Carlo Rally on a Jaguar . After a few races on his private Triumph TR2 , he returned to Ecurie Ecosse in mid-1954 to replace the injured Jimmy Stewart . Titterington finished ninth in the 1955 9-hour race at Goodwood and fourth with John Fitch in the Targa Florio . Jaguar was so impressed by Titterington's driving abilities that they hired him as a works driver for the major sports car races in 1956.

In Formula 1 he achieved strong third places in 1956 at Oulton Park and at the BRDC International Trophy in Silverstone . At the British Grand Prix he drove his Connaught up to fifth place before an engine failure stopped him.

In 1956 he turned his back on racing for family reasons.
