Carrera Panamericana 1953
The fourth Carrera Panamericana took place from November 23 to 27, 1953 and was the seventh race of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
The distance
The fourth Carrera Panamericana had eight special stages and a track length of 3,077 km. The race started in Tuxtla Gutiérrez and led back to the starting point via Ciudad Juárez and Chihuahua .
The teams
The Lancia factory team came to Mexico with five vehicles, lots of staff and equipment . The Italians had prepared three D24 and two D23 for the long road race, which were entered in the class for sports cars over 1.6 liter displacement. The Lancia team management had hired top drivers in order to win the overall standings of this race. Juan Manuel Fangio , the Formula 1 world champion of the season in 1951 , contributed a D24; his co-driver was the Italian Gino Bronzoni . Piero Taruffi and Felice Bonetto also drove a D24. The two D23s were driven by the young Eugenio Castellotti and Giovanni Bracco . The Lancia team leadership's hopes rested on Bracco in particular. The Italian born in Biella was considered a specialist in long road races. Last year he had won the Mille Miglia and was in the lead at the Carrera for a long time before retiring due to a defect. Before the start of the third stage, there was an act of great sportiness. Bracco, through journalist Günther Molter, informed a stunned Mercedes team that it no longer makes sense to drive fast because his car is suffering from major technical problems and will soon break down. In fact, a few kilometers after the start of the last stage, the Ferrari's power transmission ceased and victory went to Mercedes.
For Lincoln , the US manufacturer of luxury vehicles, the Carrera was of particular importance. The media attention and thereby the advertising effect in Mexico and the United States were great. For Lincoln, that public perception was important; therefore Lincoln was also represented at the Carrera with works cars. The preparation and deployment of the three Capri were left to the racing team of Bob Estes . Chuck Stevenson , Walt Faulkner , Chuck Daigh , Johnny Mantz , Clay Smith and Bill Stroppe were hired as drivers . A fourth car driven by Jack McGrath and Manuel Ayulo was reported by Ronald Ferguson.
The Scuderia Ferrari was not officially at the start . Enzo Ferrari but supported the Scuderia Guastalla by Franco Cornacchia logistically. Cornacchia came to Mexico with four Ferrari 375MM . One of the drivers was Umberto Maglioli , who won the Carrera a year later . Cornacchia registered a fifth vehicle just before the entry deadline; a Chrysler New York special driven by the two Italians Antonio Stagnoli and Giuseppe Scotuzzi .
Three German reports are also worth mentioning: Porsche launched two 550 Spyders ; Hans Herrmann and Karl Kling were hired as drivers . Adolf Brudes started with a Borgward Hansa 1500 RS .
Race course
The race itself was dominated by the European teams and ended with a triple triumph for the Lancia team. Juan Manuel Fango won with a lead of seven minutes on his team-mate Piero Taruffi. Third was Eugenio Castellotti. The success was overshadowed by the death of her teammate Felice Bonetto, who crashed into a house in an accident and was dead on the spot.
