Joel Thorne

Joel Thorne (born October 16, 1914 in New York City , New York , USA , † October 17, 1955 in North Hollywood , California , USA ) was an American racing driver and engineer.

Career

Thorne took part in a racing car he had designed himself four times between 1938 and 1941 in the Indianapolis 500 , with his best placing in 1940 as fifth. In addition, he made several unsuccessful attempts to qualify for the race. In 1946, George Robson won Indianapolis in a Thorne racing car. After his racing career, he devoted himself to aircraft construction. In 1955 he had a fatal accident with such an airplane. After a risky maneuver, he fell into a residential building. Eight other people died in the accident.
