Indianapolis 500 in 1994

The Indianapolis 500 , often just called the Indy 500 , has been held since May 30, 1911 and is therefore one of the oldest and most traditional circuit car races in the world (the oldest race that is no longer held today is the Targa Florio , the was first held in 1906). It has been the highlight in the racing calendar of the IndyCar Series since 1996 , and until 1995 of the former Indy Car World Series . With well over 400,000 spectators on site, it is the world's largest annual one-day sporting event and is counted among the Grand Slam races. It is characterized by many pre- and post-race traditions that have been added in the course of the events. So z. B. the winner a glass of milk during the victory celebration immediately after the race and the number of starters is limited to 33 drivers.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was in 1909 the first specifically for car racing built motorsport race in the US. Located in the city of Speedway in the US state of Indiana , which is completely enclosed by Indianapolis , it has the shape of an oval and consists of four 9 ° 12 'banked bends, each measuring 400 feet from the corner entrance to the corner exit . The route has a total length of 2.5 miles .

The surface originally consisted of gravel and tar . After the track was badly damaged in the opening races, it was given a new surface made of over three million bricks in the fall of 1909, which earned it the nickname "Brickyard". In 1936 parts of the route began to be paved, and by 1941 almost the entire route was paved, only most of the start-finish straight remained unpaved. In the fall of 1961, the entire route was finally paved, with the exception of the 1 yard (91.44 cm) wide start-finish line. However, most of the bricks are still in place under the asphalt.

Race and History

Marmon Wasp's first winner Ray Harroun

The race distance is exactly 200 laps, 500 miles or 804.672 kilometers. With a current top speed of over 300 km / h under the green flag and a race duration of normally a good three hours, this race, along with other Superspeedway events, is the greatest burden on the driver and material.

In a race that reaches top speeds of around 380 km / h, extremely precise preparation and adjustment of the racing car are essential. For example, Emerson Fittipaldi lost this race in 1990 because he was fitted with a rear tire during a pit stop , the air pressure of which was 0.2 bar too low - the tire overheated, the roadholding of his car got worse and worse, Fittipaldi was unable to to keep up the pace as the front runner and has since dropped back to fourth place.

On May 30, 1911, the first 500-mile race was held by Indianapolis. The winner was Ray Harroun on a Marmon Wasp, which took 6 hours, 42 minutes and 11 seconds for the 500 miles. That corresponded to an average speed of 72.602 miles per hour (116.842 km / h). The race led to motorsport euphoria in the USA and resulted in the construction of many more speedway and superspeedway tracks.

The Indianapolis 500 is famous primarily for a multitude of unique facets that other car races lack. For example, the winner has been drinking a sip from a milk bottle since 1936 and his face is immortalized in the BorgWarner Cup.

Many winners also kiss the finish line after the race, the so-called "yard of bricks".

Other special features are a flying start in a three-man formation, which is also known as the Indianapolis start , and a high number of overtaking maneuvers. Originally, the form of the start was a stopgap solution because the cars found it difficult to start moving. You can tell that the mechanics helped push the car after pit stops.

Instead of a national anthem, the "unofficial anthem" of Indiana Back Home Again has been played or sung in Indiana since 1946 before the race . Also known are the thousands of balloons that soar into the sky before the race.

AJ Foyt (1961, 1964, 1967, 1977), Al Unser (1970, 1971, 1978, 1987) and Rick Mears (1979, 1984, 1988, 1991) have each won the Indianapolis 500 four times.

Other well-known winners are Mario Andretti (1969), Emerson Fittipaldi (1989 and 1993), Al Unser Jr. (1992 and 1994), Jacques Villeneuve (1995) and Juan Pablo Montoya (2000 and 2015).

Europeans also wrote motorsport history here, the most successful being Dario Franchitti with 3 wins (2007, 2010, 2012), Arie Luyendyk and Dan Wheldon each with 2 wins. Formula 1 world champions Jim Clark (1965) and Graham Hill (1966) also won.

Tony Kanaan finished the fastest race in 2013 as the winner with an average speed of 187.433 mph (301.645 km / h).

From 1950 to 1960 the race was a race for the automobile world championship .

Starting field

The field consists of the usually 20 or more full-time starters of the IndyCar Series and several guest starters. The guest starters are often drivers who already have IndyCar experience. The teams can be full-time teams that use another vehicle, as well as those that only compete in the Indy 500. The limit of 33 starters has existed since 1919 , the first race after the First World War. The then organizer AAA stipulated that no more than one vehicle per 400 feet (approx. 120 m) may compete.

qualification

The qualification system for the Indy 500 is unique and, compared to other automobile races, extremely complicated, which is due in particular to the limited number of starting places. Each driver is entitled to four consecutive laps in an individual time trial, which corresponds to a total distance of ten miles or 16 km. The average speed is determined over this distance, which ultimately decides on the starting place.

In the format used since 2019, the qualification takes place over two days. On the first day, all drivers get a guaranteed try. In the remaining time of the qualification you can make further attempts. At the end of the day the starting positions 10 to 30 will be determined. For these drivers the qualification is over. On the second day, the fastest nine from the previous day and those who did not make it into the top 30 for their places. The times from the previous day are not taken into account. In qualifying for the last row on the grid, the drivers have several attempts. The fastest three qualify for the race. The Top 9 Qualyfing is about starting positions 1 to 9. Each driver has one attempt over the four-lap distance.

The starting place applies to the driver; the qualification as such for the team, so that if there is a driver change, the vehicle is moved to the end of the field.
