Michael "Mike" Nazaruk (born October 2, 1921 in Newark , New Jersey , † May 1, 1955 in Langhorne , Pennsylvania ) was an American racing driver . His racing colleagues gave him the nickname "Iron Mike".
Career
Mike Nazaruk served in the US Army during World War II and was a marine on missions in Guam and Guadalcanal .
Nazaruk's motorsport career began after the war. He became one of the top midget car racers of the 1940s and won the American Racing Drivers Club championship in 1949.
In 1951 he moved to the AAA National Series and was second on his first appearance in the Indianapolis 500 mile race . In 1954 he was fifth. He contested a total of 36 races in the AAA National Series. He celebrated his only win in this class in 1952 on the Milwaukee Mile . In 1955, Nazaruk had a fatal accident in a sprint car race in Langhorne , possibly because he cleaned his goggles and was briefly inattentive.
Since the 500 miles from Indianapolis belonged to the Formula 1 World Championship from 1950 to 1960 , Nazaruk achieved a total of eight points in the drivers' world championship through his three participations in this race.
