Henry Carrington Bolton (born January 8, 1843 in New York City - † November 19, 1903 ) was an American chemist .

In 1862 he graduated from Columbian College in New York and began studying the following year with Jean-Baptiste Dumas and Charles Adolphe Wurtz in Paris. In 1864/65 he studied with Robert Bunsen in Heidelberg and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD with Friedrich Wöhler in Göttingen . He then became August Wilhelm von Hofmann's assistant in Berlin and then traveled to Mexico, Canada and California.

In 1872 he was instructor of chemistry at the School of Mines of Columbia University in New York City. In 1874 he was appointed to the chair of chemistry at the Women's Medical College of New York Infirmary. In 1877 he became professor of chemistry and science at Trinity College (Hartford) , Connecticut.

He was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science , its general secretary in 1878 and its vice president in 1882. He was also the corresponding secretary of the New York Academy and vice president of the American Association . In 1900 he became president of the Chemical Society in Washington.

In 1874 he organized a meeting of chemists at Joseph Priestley's grave in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania to mark the centenary of Priestley's discovery of oxygen, which soon led to the founding of the American Chemical Society . He also edited letters from Priestley.

He is best known for his bibliography of chemistry from 1492 to 1902. It was published by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC in 1893 with supplements in 1899, 1901 and 1904 and had over 15,000 publications. The Boltonian Society of the Chemical Heritage Foundation is named after him, an association for antiquarian chemistry books. Your newsletter is called Boltonia .
