Robert William "Bobby" Unser (born February 20, 1934 in Colorado Springs , Colorado ) is a retired American automobile racing driver .
Career
Bobby Unser started racing in 1949. In 1957 he won the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb for the first time , which he won twelve more times during his career. In 1963 he drove the Indianapolis 500 for the first time and finished in 33rd place at the end of the race. He achieved his first victory at the Indianapolis 500 in 1968. He achieved two further victories in Indianapolis in 1975 and 1981. He is the only driver besides Rick Mears who has won this race in three different decades. In 1975 he was the winner of the International Race of Champions racing series , where he was able to win two of the four races held. In 1968 and 1974 he won the USAC National Championship .
In 1990 he was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame .
Bobby Unser comes from a well-known racing family. His brother Al Unser is one of the most successful drivers in the history of the Indianapolis 500 with four victories, and his nephew Al Unser Jr. won the 500 miles twice. His son Robby Unser was also an Indycar driver, but was not as successful there as his father.
