Sebring 12 hour race in 1957
The sixth Sebring 12-Hour Race , also known as the 12-Hour Florida International Grand Prix of Endurance for The Amoco Trophy, Sebring, Florida , took place on March 23, 1957 at Sebring International Raceway and was the second round of the World Sports Car Championship this year.
The race
The 1957 sports car world championship began in January with the 1000 km race in Buenos Aires and the victory of Masten Gregory , Eugenio Castellotti and Luigi Musso in a Ferrari 290MM Spider Scaglietti .
The duel between the two Italian racing teams of Maserati and Ferrari continued in Sebring . In Buenos Aires, the Maserati 450S was used for the first time , with Juan Manuel Fangio leading until he retired due to differential damage . In Sebring, the Argentinean shared the cockpit again with the Frenchman Jean Behra . Stirling Moss and Harry Schell drove a 300S . In addition to the 290MM, Ferrari also used two 315 Sport cars . The big attraction among the spectators was the Chevrolet Corvette SS developed by Zora Arkus-Duntov , a prototype Spyder based on the Corvette C1 . The car was driven by John Fitch and Piero Taruffi .
After an initial lead by Peter Collins in the Ferrari, Fangio and Behra soon took the lead in the Maserati and did not give them up until the end of the race. The Corvette struggled with many technical problems and retired early after a suspension damage. The race was overshadowed by the first fatal accident at Sebring. After driving 40 laps, Bob Goldich overturned his Arnolt bolide , was trapped under the wreck and died at the scene of the accident.
