Sebring 12 hour race in 1984

The 32nd Sebring 12-hour race , also The Coca-Cola Classic Twelve Hours of Sebring, Sebring International Raceway , took place on March 24, 1984 at the Sebring International Raceway and was the third round of the IMSA GTP series of this Year.
Before the race
The IMSA GTP series traditionally began in 1984 with the Daytona 24-hour race . This year's edition was won by the three South Africans Sarel van der Merwe , Graham Duxbury and Tony Martin on a March 83G . In the second race, the 3-hour race in Miami , Brian Redman and Doc Bundy were victorious in a Groupp 44 Jaguar XJR-5 .
Winning car from the museum
For the second time in a row, renovation work was carried out on the line. In order to create more space for the paddock, the long straight was shortened by a few hundred meters. There were also improvements to the run-off zones and a new lighting system.
The training was dominated by the Jaguar XJR-5. Brian Redman drove a time of 2: 18.965 minutes in qualifying and thus remained well above the 200 km / h limit for the average speed over one lap. The Jaguars also dominated the first half of the race. After six hours of racing, however, halfway through the event, the Porsche 935 registered by Preston Henn , driven by Derek Bell , AJ Foyt and Bob Wollek , led the race with a lead of two laps over the competition. The team lost their position at the front and fell back after a repair to the front suspension. After a few changes in leadership, a Porsche won again in the end. The winning car, a Porsche 935J, was actually already a museum piece and belonged to Joest Racing . The Colombian Mauricio de Narváez rented the car and hired Hans Heyer and Stefan Johansson as co-pilots at short notice . For both of them it was their first start at Sebring, which ended with a win.
For Hollywood glamor, the actor Gene Hackman drove a Mazda RX-7 , but broke down early after an engine failure.
