The 50th Sebring 12-hour race , also the 50th Annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Dodge, Sebring International Raceway , took place on March 16, 2002 at the Sebring International Raceway and was the first race of the 2002 ALMS season .

Before the race

In contrast to the previous year , when the American Le Mans Series started with the 2.45-hour race in Texas , the 2002 Sebring 12-hour race was the opening race of the season.

The race

This year, completely new vehicle developments were largely missing. The Audi prototypes were once again the favorites for overall victory . In addition to the two Audi R8s used by Joest Racing for Audi Sport North America - which were driven by Rinaldo Capello , Christian Pescatori , Johnny Herbert , Tom Kristensen , Emanuele Pirro and Frank Biela - Champion Racing also set an R8 for Andy Wallace , Stefan Johansson and Jan Lammers a.

The race was won by Capello / Pescatori / Herbert in the factory Audi R8 by one lap ahead of the champion Audi of Andy Wallace, Stefan Johansson and Jan Lammers. Johnny Herbert, who in 1991 together with Bertrand Gachot and Volker Weidler on a Mazda 787B , the 24-hour race in Le Mans had won, this success now added the victory added in Sebring.

Jon Field , Duncan Dayton and Mike Durand on a MG-Lola EX257 won the LMP675 class , finishing seventh overall. The lead over the second vehicle in this racing class, the Reynard 2KQ of the Racing Organization Course and driven by the three Jones brothers, was 52 laps.

Two places behind came Corvette Racing's Chevrolet Corvette C5-R driven by Ron Fellows , Johnny O'Connell and Oliver Gavin , who won the GTS class. In the GT class, Sascha Maassen and Lucas Luhr remained victorious in a Porsche 911 GT3-RS . In the overall ranking, this duo reached 12th place.
