Jean-Denis Delétraz (born October 1, 1963 in Geneva ) is a Swiss racing driver . His son Louis Delétraz is also a racing car driver.
Career
As the costs in Formula 1 continued to rise in the mid-1990s, the door was opened wide to racing drivers who paid for their starts. One of the pilots who made it into the world's highest monoposto class in this way was Delétraz. His qualification to compete with the fastest racing drivers remained questionable. He made his Formula 1 debut in 1994 at the Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide for Gérard Larrousse's Tourtel-Larrousse team . This race went down in the history of this sport thanks to the decisive collision between Damon Hill and Michael Schumacher . Delétraz himself retired after a poor race with a gearbox failure.
Two races for the Pacific team followed in 1995 . With lap times that were consistently around ten seconds slower than those of the top drivers, Delétraz followed the field in Portugal and at the European Grand Prix . After the retirement at Estoril he was not classified at the Nürburgring because he was seven laps behind the winner Michael Schumacher at the finish.
He showed a completely different picture of his skills in the sports car. For more than a decade he has been a driver in the Le Mans Series , the American Le Mans Series and the FIA GT Championship . When it comes to endurance, consistency and team spirit, the Swiss is a sought-after pilot in various factory and private teams. He is a welcome guest at the 24 Hours of Le Mans , where he won the LMP2 class in 2001 and 2002 , and drove vehicles as diverse as the McLaren F1 GTR as well as the works Lotus GT and the Ferrari 333SP . In 2007 he drove a Lola B07 / 10 for the Swiss Spirit team together with Marcel Fässler and Iradj Alexander . The end came after 62 driven laps due to engine failure.
The Swiss had his last start at Le Mans in 2012 . The race ended prematurely for him after an accident with one of his teammates.
