The European Grand Prix is an automobile race that was first held in 1923. Since 1983 it is - with interruptions - in the context of 1 World Championship Formula in various countries of Europe held. In 2016 , the year of the last event since then, the European Grand Prix took place in the Azerbaijani capital Baku , which is partly included in Asia (see Eurasia ).

As a rule, the World Automobile Federation ( FIA ) only awards the “Grand Prix” title once to each country in the Formula 1 World Championship. From 1983 to 2015, the title "European Grand Prix" was also awarded if additional Grand Prix were held in a European country during a season. For example, from 2008 to 2012 the European Grand Prix took place in Spain on the Valencia Street Circuit , in addition to the Spanish Grand Prix on the Circuit de Catalunya .

history

Originally the "Grand Prix of Europe" (Grand Prix d'Europe) was an honorary designation of the motor sport world association AIACR and the successor organization FIA , which was additionally awarded to a race. So wore z. For example, the Great Britain Grand Prix in 1950 this designation, and the 1974 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring. This tradition was continued until 1977, after which the name was no longer given as an honorary title.

Since 1983, the title is European Grand Prix awarded to a race when held in the European country already other national Grand Prix. The first European Grand Prix of this kind was held in the 1983 season on the Brands Hatch racing circuit in Fawkham (near Dartford ) in Great Britain, since the Great Britain Grand Prix was already being held in Silverstone . In the following season, 1984 , the race at the Nürburgring took place under the title Grand Prix of Europe , in the same year the Grand Prix of Germany started at the Hockenheimring . After the Brands Hatch racing circuit was the venue again in the 1985 season , there was a break of several years.

In 1993 Donington Park racetrack near Castle Donington in Great Britain hosted the Grand Prix. This was followed in 1994 and 1997 by the Circuito de Jerez in the Andalusian city of Jerez de la Frontera as the venue. In the 1995 and 1996 seasons and from 1999 to 2007 the European Grand Prix was at home on the Nürburgring. From 2008 to 2012 this event was held on the street circuit in Valencia, Spain , in the Formula 1 seasons 2013 to 2015 there was no European Grand Prix .

In July 2014, Azerbaijani Sports Minister Azad Rahimov announced that a contract for a European Grand Prix had been signed in Baku for 2016, even though Azerbaijan is geographically part of the Middle East . In October, the route designer Hermann Tilke presented the route for the Baku City Circuit . Nico Rosberg won the European Grand Prix in Azerbaijan.
