Carlo Salamano
Carlo Salamano (* 1890 in Turin ; † January 19, 1969 ibid) was an Italian racing driver . In the history of racing, Salamano went down as the first winner of the European Grand Prix .
Career
Carlo Salamano worked as a test driver for Fiat in his hometown of Turin. He made his racing debut at the II Gran Premio delle Vetturette on September 3, 1922 on the high-speed train Autodromo di Milano in Parco di Monza . He finished the 600 km race in a Fiat 502S in fourth behind his Fiat factory colleagues Pietro Bordino , Enrico Giaccone and Evasio Lampiano .
In the 1923 Grand Prix season , Salamano competed in various Grand Prix races. At the XVII Grand Prix de l'ACF on the Circuit de Tours in France on July 2, he retired with engine failure . On September 9, 1923 Salamano celebrated the most significant success of his career. He won the III Gran Premio d'Italia in Monza in a Fiat 805/405 , with which the first European Grand Prix was held at the same time . After a race distance of exactly 800 kilometers, which he completed in 5 hours 27 minutes and 38.4 seconds, he had a 23.6 second lead over his team-mate Felice Nazzaro at the finish . Third place went to the American Jimmy Murphy on Miller .
His last race proven denied Carlo Salamano the Voiturette -race III Junior Car Club 200 on 13 October 1923 on the Brooklands Bahn in Weybridge , Surrey in the UK . There he retired in a Fiat 803/403 with engine failure, but was able to record the fastest race lap with the British Malcolm Campbell .
Then Salamano returned to his job as a test driver at Fiat. He worked there as a researcher until 1962.
