Royal Villa of Monza

The Royal Villa of Monza ( Italian Villa Reale di Monza ) is a classicist castle and former imperial residence of the Habsburgs .

history

The palace was built between 1777 and 1780 by the imperial builder Giuseppe Piermarini on behalf of the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa . It was initially used by her son, the Governor General of Lombardy, Archduke Ferdinand Karl of Austria-Este, in addition to the residence in Milan as a country residence (1780–1796). Later it was, among other things, the main residence of the Napoleonic viceroy of Italy and, together with the park, a popular refuge for the Italian kings from 1861 onwards.

The park of Monza has a size of 688 hectares and is located at the Royal Villa in the north of the city. He makes even the famous Central Park in New York in the shade, as the park is two and a half more times as large.
