Giuseppe Piermarini (born July 18, 1734 in Foligno ; † February 18, 1808 there ) was an Italian architect. One of his best-known building projects is the Milanese opera house Teatro alla Scala .

biography

Giuseppe Piermarini was born on July 18, 1734 in Foligno. After studying architecture with Luigi Vanvitelli in Rome , he supported his teacher between 1765 and 1769 in the construction of the Palace of Caserta near Naples . In 1770 he began his first project of his own: the renovation of the University of Padua . Between 1776 and 1778 he was commissioned to design the Teatro alla Scala in Milan , which would become his most famous project.

At the same time Piermarini accepted the call to the newly founded Academy of Fine Arts in Milan and took over the chair of architecture.

In 1777 Piermarini began building the Royal Villa of Monza ; In 1778 he built the Galleria Nuova , a corridor in Palazzo Ducale in Mantua . Other construction projects followed: Palazzo Greppi (1772–1778), Palazzo Belgioioso (1772–1781) and the facade of the Church of the Prepositurale dei Santi Gervasio e Protasio (1780) in Parabiago .

In 1798 Piermarini returned to his hometown Foligno to take part in other building projects. He died in Foligno on February 18, 1808.
