history

Gurit-Heberlein AG, founded in 1835, was mainly active in textile finishing, the manufacture of synthetic fibers ( Helanca ) and textile machine construction until the 1960s . At the end of the 1960s, the company diversified into various areas, including the dental business in 1967 with the takeover of the Coltène company in Altstätten, which specializes in dental products . Coltène AG merged with the American company Whaledent Inc. in 1990. This resulted in the Health Care division within the Gurit-Heberlein Group.

In 2005 the Gurit-Heberlein board of directors decided to split the group into two independent companies along the previous divisional boundaries. The medical and dental business was listed on the stock exchange as an independent company under the company name Medisize Holding AG.

At the end of February 2008 Medisize decided to sell the entire medical business and to concentrate exclusively on the dental business. The company was then renamed Coltène Holding AG in April 2008 and one year later the headquarters were moved from Wattwil to Altstätten. Today the company operates under the name Coltène / Whaledent.
