The castle Persenbeug is a castle in the Lower Austrian municipality Persenbeug-Gottsdorf .

history

The castle was first mentioned in history in 907. The Bavarian Sieghart, Count zu Sempt and Ebersberg , took possession of “Bösenberg” and fortified it.

In 1045 the Sempt-Ebersberger dynasty went out and a solemn estate settlement took place on July 12th at the castle, in which King Heinrich III. was present. Then the floor of the knight's hall collapsed due to overload, so that the whole company fell; the king got away with minor injuries, Bishop Bruno von Würzburg and Abbot Altmann von Ebersberg lost their lives; Richlind, the widow of Adalberos II, the last Ebersberger, is also said to have perished.

Over the centuries the castle changed hands many times. It was owned by the Austrian imperial family until 1593. Then it was sold to the family of the Hoyos , who expanded the castle to its present form. On December 3, 1800, Emperor Franz I of Austria bought the castle and the Persenbeug estate as free private property. At approximately the same time, the Gutenbrunn rule also passed into the possession of Franz I, which was also incorporated into his private fund. Furthermore, Rorregg Castle in Yspertal still belongs to the Persenbeuger estate.

Through several inheritances, the lords of Persenbeug and Gutenbrunn came into the possession of Emperor Franz Josef I , who passed them on to his daughter Marie Valerie in 1916 . On August 17, 1887, the last Emperor of Austria, Karl I , was born at Persenbeug Castle . Marie Valerie married the Archduke Franz Salvator of Austria-Tuscany (1866–1939) in 1890 . Her children, including Hubert Salvator Habsburg-Lothringen , followed as owners of Persenbeug and Rorregg Castle, as well as Wallsee Castle and the Imperial Villa in Bad Ischl . Today the castle is owned by their descendants, the Habsburg-Lothringen and Waldburg-Zeil families .
