The Stallburg is a three-storey building located in downtown Vienna between Josefsplatz and Michaelerplatz , surrounding an arcaded courtyard . The Stallburg is part of the Hofburg .

history

Archduke Maximilian , who later became Emperor Maximilian II, had it built as a residence by the architect Pietro Ferrabosco in the mid-16th century (probably 1558–1565) . Originally the first elephant from Vienna was supposed to move in there. From 1659 to 1776 the art collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm was housed here, the so-called Stallburg-Galerie .

The name Stallburg comes from the body horses of the imperial family that were housed on the ground floor. Under the rule of Emperor Charles VI. the horses of the Spanish Riding School were housed there. The fountain with wrought iron bars in the middle of the courtyard was built in 1675.

Shortly before the end of World War II, the building was badly damaged by bombs in 1945 and was faithfully reconstructed from 1947 to 1948. The passage with the arcades between Hofburg and Stallburg was opened on July 1, 1948, on this occasion an arcade passage along the (narrow) Stallburggasse also for pedestrians. The Renaissance arches in the courtyard were uncovered between 1955 and 1960, after more than 300 years, and the building was restored to its original state. The secondary gallery of the Kunsthistorisches Museum was temporarily housed in the stables .

Today the Lipizzaner horses of the Spanish Riding School are housed there, the associated stud is in Piber in Styria . You can see the courtyard from Reitschulgasse. Right next to it was the now closed Lipizzaner Museum.

The Austrian Parliament and the Austrian Society for Foreign Policy and the United Nations are on the second floor . The technician Cercle is on the first floor . Other offices are also located there.
