The Palais Erzherzog Rainer (also: Palais Rainer ) was a building in Vienna built in 1711/12 and demolished in 1957 . It was located at Wiedner Hauptstrasse 63 in the 4th district of Vienna, Wieden .

history

Originally called “Palais Engelskirchner”, the palace was built in 1711/12 as a country residence for the rich trader Leopold von Engelskirchner and was located within a large park. The sculptural design was done by the Italian sculptor Lorenzo Mattielli . In 1832, when the palace was owned by Johann Heinrich Freiherr von Geymüller , it was the first private house in Vienna to be lit with gas. After multiple changes of ownership, Archduke Rainer acquired the property in 1854 and lived there until his death in 1913. He was also the name giver for the palace.

The building was damaged during World War II and was used by the Soviet occupying forces after 1945. Only the building belonging to the winter riding school on Wiedner Hauptstrasse was under monument protection; the palace itself was not recognized as a historic monument because of the renovations in the 19th century. The then influential rubber company Semperit succeeded, however, in overcoming the concerns of the Federal Monuments Office regarding the winter riding school in recourse to the ministry and in building up the entire property with a high-rise central office planned by the architect Georg Lippert (a well-known “palace user”). After the decline of the group, the building complex became the seat of the Austrian Federal Chamber of Commerce, now called the Austrian Chamber of Commerce .
