Martin Kupf (born March 12, 1935 in Gablonz an der Neisse ) is an Austrian restorer and monument protection activist.

Live and act

Martin Kupf spent most of his school days in Vienna and graduated from the Albertgasse grammar school. He then studied architecture at the Vienna University of Technology and restoration at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna . He completed this course with a master's degree .

He then worked as a restorer in the Austrian Gallery , at the Federal Monuments Office and between 1966 and 2001 in the Austrian Museum for Folklore in Vienna.

A restoration concept for the street furniture in Vienna's Ringstrasse , which was only partially implemented, came from Kupf ; among other things, he designed the templates for replicating former advertising pillars in this area. He also worked for the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna and the Wiener Künstlerhaus for many years . He also deals with historical architecture.

Kupf is particularly committed to maintaining Vienna's inner city. He speaks out against certain types of modern street lamps, such as the replacement of the so-called “bishop's rods ” or “lilies of the valley” on Vienna's Schwarzenbergplatz with bulky lighting fixtures. On this subject, he conducted a survey that showed the rejection of the new lanterns by local residents and tourists. This survey result was notarized. In the case of the Kärntner Strasse pedestrian zone , his advocacy of traditional lighting received media attention. He is currently criticizing the planned expansion of the Hotel Intercontinental , in which the existing hotel building is to be increased and a second building, around 73 meters high, is to be built in the UNESCO World Heritage area of downtown Vienna. According to Kupf, this second tower would significantly impair the so-called Canaletto view from Belvedere Palace onto Vienna's inner city.

Martin Kupf is vice president and board member of the Austrian Society for the Preservation of Monuments and Sites and a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus .
