Austrian Society for the Preservation of Monuments and Sites
The Austrian Society for the Preservation of Monuments and Sites is a non-profit association (NPO) for the research and maintenance of monuments and sites in Austria .
history
The first president of the association was the master builder of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, Karl Holey .
The society founded in Vienna on June 12, 1947 was called the Association for Monument Preservation in Vienna . The then mayor of Vienna, Theodor Körner , was elected honorary president. The principle of the association was and remained party-political neutrality. Under the chairmanship of Michel Engelhart , the association received its permanent domicile in the Künstlerhaus Vienna in 1958 . In 1961 the name was first changed to "Association for Monument and Cityscape Preservation". During the presidency of Rudolf Bachleitner (1967 to 1998) there was a second name change, which emphasizes the overall Austrian orientation of the association's goals.
The company took part in numerous controversies relating to monument protection , for example regarding the underground car park on Stephansplatz in Vienna or the demolition of the Florianikirche, and tried again and again to support the Federal Monuments Office , an authority bound by instructions in the second instance, through professional civil society engagement. Friedmund Hueber is the current president .
Since 1962, the club's magazine, Stones Speaking , has been published regularly , supplemented by current releases under the title Steinschlag .
