The son of a forest controller went to school in Leitmeritz and studied at the Technical University in Vienna, where he also worked as an assistant from 1904 to 1906. From 1908 to 1925 Holey was an official of the Central Commission for Art and Historical Monuments, then from 1915 to 1932 General Curator (title from 1926) of the Austrian-Hungarian. Preservation of monuments or the monument office of the Austrian First Republic. In 1925 Holey was appointed full professor of architecture at the Vienna University of Technology, where he had been an associate professor since 1915.

Karl Holey was primarily a building historian, monument conservator, cathedral builder and, as an architect, primarily a church builder. In the era of Red Vienna, however, Holey was also active in municipal housing. Like his colleague Siegfried Theiss, he stood in a certain contrast to Otto Wagner's school . Holey was closely associated with the corporate state regime and was a member of the federal culture council from 1934. From 1937 to 1938 he was rector of the Vienna University of Technology (voluntary resignation in 1938) and from 1945 was head of the reconstruction of the cathedral in Salzburg. In 1946 he was reappointed rector of the Vienna University of Technology. From 1951 as a retired professor, he remained active in his areas of interest.

He was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery .

Awards

Holey received numerous awards, including the Commander's Cross of the Austrian Order of Merit in 1935 . In 1950 he became an honorary citizen of the City of Vienna . From 1930 to 1931 he was President of the Catholic Academic Association, from 1947 President of the Association for Monument and Townscape Preservation, now the Austrian Society for Monument and Townscape Preservation . In 1954 he received the Great Silver Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria . In 1965 a place in the Per-Albin-Hansson-Siedlung Nord in the 10th district of Holeyplatz was named in his honor.
