Karl Kupsky

Karl Kupsky (born December 30, 1906 in Vienna , † April 14, 1984 in Vienna or Baden ) was an Austrian architect and university professor . He was rector of the Vienna University of Technology .

Life

Karl Kupsky studied architecture at the Vienna University of Technology from 1924, graduated in 1928 and worked from that point until 1932 in Erwin Ilz and Hans Pfann's studio. In parallel, he attended until 1930 when Karl Holey master school architecture at the university, in 1931 he received his doctorate there to the Dr. techn. with a dissertation on the proposal to regulate the XXI. District . From 1932 he worked at the university as an assistant in the chair for housing, urban development and settlement with Erwin Ilz. In 1937 he passed the civil engineering examination, and from 1946 to 1950 he carried out some renovations and new buildings in an office community with Harald Bauer.

In 1946 he became an associate professor, and from 1950 until his retirement in 1977 he was the successor of Siegfried Theiss as a full professor for structural engineering at the Technical University. In the academic years 1950/51 to 1953/54 he was also dean of the Faculty of Architecture. In the 1959/60 academic year he was elected rector of the Vienna University of Technology . As chairman of the space committee of the Technical University from 1951 to 1977, among other things, he prepared the general construction plan for the Getreidemarkt site , and from 1965 to 1972 the so-called chemistry high-rise of the university on the corner of Getreidemarkt / Lehargasse was built on the site of the former kuk war school built behind the genius headquarters building.

From 1951 he was a corresponding member of the German Academy for Urban Development and Regional Planning , and from 1965 to 1975 he was President of the Künstlerhaus .

Karl Kupsky realized numerous residential, commercial and industrial buildings. In addition, in 1946 and 1947 he created zoning plans for Wiener Neustadt and Feldkirch , and on behalf of the City of Vienna he worked out a concept for traffic planning . In 1958 he carried out preliminary work for the new building of the Vienna General Hospital with his work on the public authority project for the general hospital . Kupsky took part in competitions for the redesign of Karlsplatz (1946) and the construction of the Wiener Stadthalle (1952/53) as well as the Electrotechnical Institute building of the Vienna University of Technology in Gußhausstrasse (1965).

In 1941 Karl Kupsky married the architect Friederike Lüftner (1913–1989). The church wedding took place five years later in Gaaden near Vienna.

Karl Kupsky, who resigned his architectural license in 1978, died at the age of 78 in Baden near Vienna. Just one year later, Friederike Lüftner donated the Karl Kupsky Prize , which has been awarded annually to architecture students at the Vienna University of Technology for special achievements in the field of structural engineering.
