List of the rectors of the Vienna University of Technology

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of rectors of the Vienna University of Technology lists all rectors of this university from its foundation in 1815. From 1815 to 1866 there were five appointed directors, and from 1866 to 2011 a total of 107 elected rectors. Since 2011, Sabine Seidler has been the first woman to head the university. Karl Holey was rector twice: in the academic years 1938/39 and 1946/47, and Joseph Neuwirth was twice rector.

Directors or rectors of the Polytechnic Institute (1815–1872)

The Polytechnic Institute was founded in 1815. In 1865 it was laid down in an organizational statute approved by Emperor Franz Josef I that instead of the director appointed by the government, the college of professors should elect a rector from among its members. The first elected rector was the professor for higher geodesy and astronomy Joseph Herr in 1866. On April 10, 1872, the polytechnic institute was converted into a technical college.
