In 1827 he received a professorship in Salzburg , in 1828 he became a professor of mathematics and mechanical engineering at the Polytechnic Institute in Vienna . There he was the first to give the popular Sunday lectures on his field.
In 1847 he was made an honorary citizen of Vienna for his services to fire extinguishing, water supply and gas lighting . In 1849 he took over the management of the Polytechnic Institute.
