Karl Kraus (geodesist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl Kraus (born April 23, 1939 ; † April 5, 2006 in Berlin ) was a German-Austrian geodesist , university professor and long-term head of the institute for photogrammetry at the Vienna University of Technology .

Live and act

Kraus studied geodesy at the Technical University of Munich and later worked as a lecturer at the University of Stuttgart . From there he received a call to the Vienna University of Technology in the 1970s as the successor to Karl Neumaier . Here he initiated a number of new research projects - u. a. on the subject of digital terrain models , for program systems for block adjustment , geoinformatics and accident photogrammetry .

Kraus wrote multi-volume textbooks for photogrammetry and remote sensing and was a popular university professor , at whose institute there was an almost familiar working atmosphere. He encouraged many of his graduate students to write a dissertation and accordingly began various collaborations with civil engineering and business.

From 1987 to 1989 Kraus was the rector of the TU Vienna. He died suddenly of heart failure at a conference in Berlin in April 2006. He left a wife and grown children.
