Karl Kobes (born August 23, 1869 in Vienna ; † November 8, 1950 there ) was an Austrian mechanical engineer and university professor . He was rector of the Vienna University of Technology .

Life

Karl Kobes studied at the Vienna University of Technology with Johann von Radinger and Leopold von Hauffe , among others , where he passed the second state examination in civil engineering in 1894 and in mechanical engineering in 1897. From 1898 he worked as a designer at the TH Vienna.

In 1902 he was appointed associate professor. In 1905 he received his doctorate as Dr. techn. and was appointed full professor of theoretical mechanical engineering and mechanical engineering. In the academic years 1913/14 and 1914/15 he was dean of the mechanical engineering school, in the academic year 1919/20 he was elected rector of the Vienna University of Technology . During his rectorate, women were also able to enroll as regular students for the first time. In 1935 he retired , but continued his lectures until 1939. In 1936 he was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Austrian Order of Merit . Kobes was appointed Hofrat and in 1944 Honorary Senator of the Vienna University of Technology . In his scientific work he proved, among other things, that the breakdown speed of train suction air brakes can be higher than the speed of sound.

Karl Kobes died in 1950 at the age of 81. In 1990 Kobesgasse in the 22nd district of Vienna, Donaustadt, was named after him.
