Renate Kolde (* August 1931 ; † September 19, 2012 in Juist , East Frisia ) was a journalist and pilot as well as the first female flight director in Germany, and most recently also the longest-serving. In aviation she was known as the "voice of the north".

Life

Kolde initially worked as a journalist in various departments for the editorial team of the weekly newspaper “ Die Zeit ” in Hamburg until 1962 . Then she got to know and love Hans Kolde . Through him she got to the North Sea island of Juist in the same year , where she married him.

Her husband ran the Theodor Wuppermann youth education center at Juist Airfield , which was about to be expanded. The airfield had to meet the technical requirements of the current aviation law and in future be equipped with an official aviation supervisory authority. Trying to get a professional perspective on the island, Kolde got her pilot's license against this background. After completing her training at the air traffic control school in Munich, she was appointed by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Transport as an air supervisory officer at the Juist airfield.

As the first woman on a tower , Kolde had to contend with considerable reservations on the part of men. However, with her know-how and assertiveness, she managed to gain recognition from private and professional pilots. For the aviation authority, Kolde became an authority for questions of flight safety . During her many years of activity there was not a single accident, but in 1984 the " Prix Orange " from AOPA-Germany as an award for the friendliest German airfield, attributed to Renate Kolde and her colleagues Walter Pilgrim and Erich Faller according to a pilot survey.

On December 31, 1996, Renate Kolde ended her 34-year career at the Juist airfield, but as a pilot she remained actively involved in aviation for many years after her retirement.

From 1999, Kolde brought her journalistic experience to the 100-page seasonal magazine “Strandlooper” on the North Sea island.
