The airfield Juist is a commercial airport of the North Sea island of Juist . It is mainly served by private pilots, but the airline FLN Frisia Luftverkehr GmbH Norddeich also flies to Juist from Norddeich on demand flights with fixed departure times. The island's youth education center also offers gliding courses on the island as a special feature. This is unique to the East Frisian Islands.
Juister Airfield ranks second after Hanover Airport in terms of flight movements in Lower Saxony . One reason for this is the tide-dependent ferry traffic. The ferry crossing takes between 75 and 140 minutes, depending on the tide and wind conditions, and is only possible once a day to the island or the mainland with the ships of the Norden-Frisia shipping company, with the exception of the summer months from July to September. Since June 2010 Air Hamburg has been offering a daily scheduled flight to the commercial airport in Hamburg .
So-called “pinch hitter” courses are held regularly at Juist airfield, during which flight operations are practiced under emergency conditions. Around 600 participants are trained every year. During the season, up to 70 flight instructors are active on the field.
Incidents
On August 21, 2009 a motor glider of the type Scheibe SF 25 "Falke" collided with the ground about 250 meters before the threshold of the grass runway 26. As part of a "pinch hitter" course, the flight instructor had reduced the engine power during the approach and extended the aircraft's spoilers for demonstration reasons. After a loss of altitude, there was no longer enough power to land safely. One of the two inmates was slightly injured in the crash.
Personalities
- Renate Kolde (1931–2012), the first female flight manager in Germany, after 34 years of service ultimately also the longest, worked at the airfield from 1962 to 1996. It was known as the “voice of the north” by private and professional pilots.
Award
In 1984 the airfield received the “ Prix Orange ” from AOPA-Germany as “the friendliest German airfield”, attributed to Renate Kolde and her colleagues Walter Pilgrim and Erich Faller according to a pilot survey.
