history

As early as 1967, the possibilities of setting up a commercial airfield in the vicinity of the city of Uelzen were discussed. Various available properties in both the east and west of the city of Uelzen were taken into account. In 1968 the current site of the Uelzen airfield was shortlisted. After the approval of the Ministry of Economics and Transport in Hanover to allow the area as a traffic airfield, the grass runway was laid out by the members of the FSV Cumulus in 1970–1971 and the halls, the recreation buildings and the tower were built by the Uelzen district.

After the approval for the provisional approval, the first glider starts were carried out in May 1971. The Uelzen airfield received its final approval in August 1971.

In 1976 a 400 meter long and ten meter wide asphalt landing strip was prepared to replace the grass runway that was damp in places.

In August 1981, the Weser-Ems district government granted the aerodrome permit to be expanded to 600 meters long and 20 meters wide after the asphalt runway had been completed. The asphalt runway was extended to a length of 800 meters in 2004.

society

The FSV Cumulus Uelzen eV is based at the Uelzen airfield. In accordance with its statutes, the association is dedicated to promoting aviation for the purpose of physical and mental training and operates the glider and powered flight sectors. The airfield used for this is the property of the district, is used by the FSV Cumulus and is publicly operated, maintained and looked after. The aircraft used is the property of the association and is serviced and repaired in-house.

The association is a member of the German Aeroclub Landesverband Niedersachsen e. V. He maintains his own flight school. Club members can receive flight training to become a glider pilot ( GPL ) and powered pilot ( PPL-N and PPL according to JAR-FCL ).
