Gerdau is a municipality in the middle of the Lüneburg Heath in the district of Uelzen , Lower Saxony . The municipality of Gerdau is part of the Suderburg municipality and is located on the Gerdau river of the same name .
Community structure
The municipality of Gerdau consists of the localities Bargfeld , Barnsen , Bohlsen , Gerdau, Groß Süstedt and Holthusen II . In contrast to other united communities, the eponymous district of Gerdau is only the second largest after Bohlsen.
history
The place was first mentioned in 1004, when Duke Bernhard von Sachsen ceded the curtis gerdauge to the Michaeliskloster in Lüneburg. Other names were 1197 Gherdou, 1302 Gerdowe, 1322 villa Gherdowe, 1369 to der Gherdowe, 1460 Gherdauw, 1530 Gerdow to 1662 Gerdau. In 1225 a mill in the Bohlsen district was mentioned for the first time. The Bohlsen watermill was later developed here on the Gerdau and is the only watermill still in operation in the Uelzen district today .
Incorporations
On July 1, 1972, the communities of Bargfeld, Barnsen, Bohlsen, Groß Süstedt and Holthusen II were incorporated.

Buildings
The St. Michaelis Church in Gerdau was first mentioned in 1004. The Evangelical Lutheran church was built on the foundations of a former Gothic brick building. It was renovated and enlarged in 1890.
traffic
The Uelzen airfield is located east of the village of Barnsen . The place has an 800 meter long asphalt runway and is used by business aviation in addition to private sports aviation.

The community is a member of the Suderburger Land e. V. and advertises its scenic and tourist attractions in the Gerdautal .
